Most people are still trapped: the lower middle class is preoccupied with economic matters, while the upper class is in its comfort zone, busy developing its businesses. The situation won't improve by itself if humans ignore the environment.
INVISIBLE TRAPS
Modern humans live in two major traps. Traps of different forms, but rooted in the same disease: measuring everything by profit.
Lower Middle Class
Trapped in Survival For most lower middle class people, life is about survival. Wake up in the morning, go to work, come home, pay the mortgage, repeat. There is no room to think about carbon emissions. There is no time to sort the trash. All there is is: "Will this month be enough or not?" They are not bad for the environment. They simply have no choice. When hungry, forests can be cut down. When they need money quickly, the sea can be dredged. This is not their fault. This is a system trap.
Upper Class
Trapped in the Comfort Zone On the other hand, there is the upper class. They are already economically "secure." They have a house, savings, and business is running. So what happens? They are busy developing their businesses. Chasing 10%, 20%, 30% growth. Chasing expansion, acquisitions, and the next quarter's profits. The comfort zone makes them blind. As long as financial reports are green, as long as businesses grow, damage outside the factory fence is considered an "external cost." It's none of their business. They, too, are trapped. Trapped in the illusion that unlimited growth is possible on a finite planet.
The Same Root: Measuring Human Value from Money Look.
Two different classes, two different preoccupations. One is busy looking for food. The other is busy developing a business. But the root is the same: The Business Brain.
The brain that believes that human value = productivity.
The brain that believes that progress = economic growth.
The brain that believes that nature = resources to be exploited.
As long as we still wear this lens, teachers will be valued less than salespeople. Farmers will lose prestige than traders. And environmentalists will be considered "idle." Yet we all live in the same ship, and this ship is leaking, this ship is our planet.
WHEN EVERYONE IS BUSY WITH THEMSELVES
There is a paradox in this age. We are digitally connected, but most divided in responsibility.
The Economy Becomes the New God.
Once, humans worshipped nature. Then they worshipped kings. Now we worship one thing: economic growth.
Rising IPR = great country.
Rising turnover = great company.
Rising salaries = great people.
Everything is measured by the numbers in the account. There is no column in the financial report for deforested forests. No report for dead rivers, lost subak.
The result? We are giving birth to a generation that is good at calculating profits, but blind to calculating damage.
Businesses that Forget Impact
The upper class is busy developing their businesses. It's natural. That's their job. The problem is not with the business.
The problem is the basic assumption: _"The important thing is that business is running, environmental problems will be taken care of later."_ Factories operate 24 hours, waste is dumped into rivers.
Hotels are built on the beach, coral reefs are destroyed. Unicorn startups get billions in funding, but their employees and couriers work overtime without guarantees.
This is not business. This is cost shifting. Profits are privatized. Damage is normalized.
Environment: The Victim Who Always Pays Last
Meanwhile, below, the lower middle class is busy struggling with the economy. There is no energy for demonstrations. No time for education. No funds for green technology. And in the middle, the environment is silent. Rivers collect plastic. The air collects smoke. The soil collects poison.
The environment can't go on strike. It can't sue. The only way it speaks is through floods, landslides, crop failures, and disease.
And here's the key sentence:
"Things won't improve by themselves from humans ignoring the environment."
There's no natural law that says "if humans stay quiet, the earth will heal itself." No angels will come sorting our trash. No magical technology will save carbon if we continue to ignore the environment.
Today's damage is the accumulation of the "later" decisions we made yesterday. And if we continue to be preoccupied with ourselves, our children and grandchildren will pay the bill.
